FAQ

Do I need to be in shape before I start?

Not at all! You’ll get fitter as you train. Karate naturally improves strength, coordination, speed, and flexibility at your own pace. Many of our students are amazed by how much their fitness improves within just a few months.

If you have a medical condition that could be affected by exercise, we recommend speaking to your doctor before beginning training.

Am I too young or too old to start martial arts?

Nope!

  • Our minimum age is 5 years old.

  • There’s no upper age limit—karate offers both physical and mental benefits to all ages. Whether you're 6 or 60, there's something in it for you!

What should I wear and bring?

  • To start with, wear:

  • A T-shirt and jogging bottoms or leggings

  • Bare feet (no need for special shoes!)

  • A bottle of water and your enthusiasm

  • Later, you'll need a Gi (karate suit) and some basic training equipment, which we’ll guide you through as you progress.

Is karate safe? Will I get injured?

Karate is a very safe martial art when taught correctly. Minor bumps and bruises can happen (as with any physical activity), but serious injuries are rare. We prioritise controlled technique, respect, and safety at all times.

How long does it take to get a black belt?

Think of it like this: how long is a piece of string?
On average, it takes around 6 years for a dedicated student training 2–3 times a week with consistent effort. Be wary of clubs promising black belts in 1–2 years—karate is about earning your belt, not buying one.

Do you offer beginner-only classes?

We welcome beginners at any time, so there’s no need to wait for a “beginner-only” session. You’ll often find others starting at the same time as you—and we always ensure you're supported every step of the way.

Do I have to fight?

Karate is a martial art, so yes—it does include fighting techniques.
But don’t worry! You’ll be introduced gradually, and always paired with partners of a similar level. Sparring is controlled and technical, not full-contact. The focus is on learning timing, distance, and power, not aggression.

What is Kata and why do we learn it?

Kata is a sequence of choreographed movements that simulates a fight against multiple opponents.
Each kata teaches strategic principles of combat and helps develop your technique, rhythm, and focus. It's a vital part of traditional karate and is also beautiful to perform!

Are your instructors insured?

Yes. Our instructor is fully insured through the English Karate Federation.

Sensei Brandon also holds an enhanced DBS.

Do you have a safeguarding officer?

Our safeguarding officer is Julie Taylor and can be contacted on 07368-284688

Do you have a belt grading system?

Yes! Allfitness Karate follows a clear and structured belt grading syllabus. Students progress through coloured belts by demonstrating skills and knowledge at each level.
